April 7, 2025 – Professor Sean Davidson Awarded 5-Year, £925,428 BHF Programme Grant

The Hatter Cardiovascular Institute is proud to announce Professor Sean Davidson has been awarded a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Programme Grant. These highly competitive Programme Grants are awarded to support established researchers to undertake research focussing on a key strategic research theme.

Prof Davidson with Co-Investigator Prof Yellon, were awarded £925,428 over 5 years to investigate a new drug (UCL-TRO-1938) they developed which activates a pro-survival pathway to protect the heart from damage during a heart attack as well as the brain from injury during an ischaemic stroke. This significant funding will allow formation of a dedicated research team along with associated resources to address specific research questions related to their central hypothesis.

As a translational laboratory, their ultimate aim would be to demonstrate the effects of UCL-TRO-1938 to the clinical setting, in order to advance health and well-being in those presenting with a myocardial infarction or an ischaemic stroke.

We look forward to following the progress of these studies over the coming years and are excited about the potential to improve patient outcomes.
